Mitigate the risk of complaints, enforcement or costly delays
Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) Rule 012 is a complex regulation that governs noise impacts from power generation facilities in Alberta, including:
- Power plants
- Gas utility pipelines
- Transmission lines
Be certain you’ll meet even the strictest regulations
Patching Associates has been helping utility companies meet noise control requirements for over 25 years.
Our extensive experience combined with our powerful data gathering and analysis tools enable us to quickly and accurately assess the impact your facility will have on nearby residences. We measure and monitor the noise of an existing facility (and the cumulative impact of nearby facilities) and move swiftly to help prevent complaints and resolve regulatory concerns.
Our reports are easy to understand and assure stakeholders that their power generation facilities:
- Meet regulatory requirements
- Pass design phase Noise Impact Assessments (NIA)s, in accordance with AUC regulations
- Have actionable noise control specifications and recommendations
- Noise control costs and understood and managed
- Reduce the risk of noise complaints from area residents
What you need to know about AUC Rule 012
Who needs to comply?
AUC Rule 012 regulations apply to all power generation facilities, including power plants (coal, biomass, gas and solar), co-generation facilities, substations, wind farms, transmission lines, and hydro-power facilities.
Licensees planning to generate electric energy solely for self-use, may not need to file an application with the AUC, but they must still comply with AUC Rule 012. Any facilities transferring energy back to the grid must comply with Rule 012.
When does rule 012 apply?
Rule 012 regulations require facilities to have an NIA completed prior to facility application, to ensure that cumulative noise impacts are controlled during the design phase. Cumulative noise impacts are defined as noise from existing, proposed and approved energy facilities, and include facilities licensed under Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) Directive 038.
Operational facilities that receive a valid noise complaint are also required to perform a comprehensive noise survey at the residence in order to demonstrate compliance.
How does Patching Associates help?
Patching Associates has significant experience completing NIA’s for the Power Generation Industry, to ensure that noise is controlled and your facility meets all regulations. We also provide detailed specifications in our reports, and recommend cost effective methods for meeting Rule 012 requirements with minimal retrofits.
